Echoes of Expression - Live Action Documentaries 1

Festival
PÖFF Shorts 2024
Programme
Doc@Shorts

This programme explores art as the vessel of transformation. Weaving together stories of creativity, identity, and resilience across landscapes, these films take you along for a stroll from the coastal weavers, who silently craft in the fabric of time, to a buried album beneath Orkney’s soil set to challenge our perception of patience. Bringing tradition and vivid self-expression, a Liberian artist, seeking refuge from war, uses his distinct otherworldly art to channel the trauma of displacement, while another artist, a filmmaker, deals with loss, by reclaiming "Reindeer Queer" as a symbol of resistance, when navigating his grief and identity. Among these stories we are also invited to join an intimate exploration of three young men in their chase of an ambitious dream of becoming trap music stars.

57 is the number of female weavers who work on the coasts of the Basque Country, a traditional occupation that they continue
as if time had stopped. With their hands covered in salt, they silently weave without stopping. They are part of the sea and its
mystery. The radio alert of a ship breaks the night, a lighthouse illuminates everything with its light, a sailor drifts through the
thoughts of the water and several hands dance and dance until they merge with the nets.

Under two feet of peaty soil in Orkney, lies the only recording of Scottish composer Erland Cooper’s unheard album. In an entirely unique attempt to collaborate with the natural world, it would be an experiment on patience, art and value. Will the tape emerge silent, and does it matter if it does?

Straddling the line between documentary and fiction, the film follows the journey of a filmmaker in search of answers to the questions left by the death of his great friend. If in the past Reindeer Queer sounded pejorative to both of them, today it is synonymous with resistance and the possibility of being exactly who you are.
