Queer Joys
We ask for something radical - a queer joy. Our queerness is often depicted as the foundation of our most painful experiences, and it can be. Especially for those society deems more alive, othered, unworthy. But this pain should not be fetishised for pity - least for the straight gaze. We might instead remember that our queerness can be the source of a lot of beauty.
This selection of works by a diverse group of filmmakers hopes to strike an honest balance between struggle and celebration, humor and hard truths. With films in a variety of genres from musicals to satire to thrillers, its point is to ask: what is queer joy? What makes it possible and what does it cost? Who do we allow to experience it? Who gets left out and why?
