The Art in the Artist

Festival
PÖFF Shorts 2020
Programme
Shorts Panorama

Animation has a unique position in being able to communicate both with the visual arts and filmmaking as well. Here are some prominent examples of this care for dialogue: these are not hybrid films or artworks, but animated shorts which invite discourse on the artistic creation itself.

Who are the artists behind all those different arts, and are they indeed human? Yes, they are. Do they need a lot of other talents to work with? Yes, they (unsurprisingly) do. Are they preoccupied with creative worries, which lead to a meta-narrative of them talking about the work? In our own programme, they do. The death of the author, if ever there were one, may have deprived us of a single authoritarian voice. At the same time, the authors are still there: observing, re-arranging, testifying about their own process, and unafraid to feel frail and still artistically sensitive.

And it's not about them talking about their own art; it's about us learning a lot from watching their well-crafted films.

A famous, yet indifferent actor Jean arrives to filming location with a clean-shaved face, even though the director expects him to turn up with a four day stubble. This trifle turns out to be catastrophic for the filming, but for Jean it’s an opportunity to finally take notice of the world that surrounds him.

Jay is trapped in the relentless City until he is forced to confront his relationship with Time and himself.Jay rushes to get ready for another frantic day. Armoured against the sights and sounds of the City, he races against time until a chance encounter propels him into a strange watercolour world. Here, three Nudes reveal their truth and an enigmatic Professor directs time. But will Jay dare to expose himself in order to find the clarity and connection he seeks? Nude Triumphant combines painting from life with experimental digital animation. It was produced during the Covid-19 lockdown with a community of Queer and intersectional life models and artists. The film encourages us to pause and reflect, discovering our unique identities in stillness and building a healthier relationship with time and with ourselves.

This is a work that combines Dadaism with rap. The young us are prone to falling into the anxiety of nothingness. As an adult, we gradually have autonomy, and the youth that can gradually disappear makes us feel confused. Wouldn't it be different if we could stand at the end and watch all this, but can time really have an end? People in this era are trying to find meaning, and we are tired of meaning itself.

URBAN SPHINX is an animated short film that creatively documents the presence of street art at various neighbourhoods of Valencia, Spain, between 2018 y 2019. In URBAN SPHINX are animated these pieces of ephemeral art, connecting each image in continuity like the frames of a film. All these faces look at us with widely opened eyes, as if they tell us that we exist, but we might not exist —and the world would go on.
