In the short film world, we laud the medium as a rich, vital and essential artform. But the very term ‘short’ is a broad church. Categories such as fiction, documentary, animation, experimental, dance amongst countless others speak to the diversity of the medium but also indicates its complexities.
Whilst festivals, online platforms and other avenues give audiences the opportunity to watch shorts, how do those in the industry try and maximise their potential and get them to the widest audiences. How do filmmakers deal with the sometimes blurred lines of definition – just what is an ‘experimental’ film – and entice people to watch films amongst a sea of content. Indeed, in an artform that often resists commercialisation, is the word ‘content’ pejorative. Or should there be an embracing of more commercial avenues? How do we continue to make sure we continue to get eyeballs on shorts?
Filmmakers, distributors and other industry professionals will be on hand to discuss these issues and many more. Free for all.
